RE: Brand New Bike On Road Trip To Break In? Yes or No

I guess you can assume MPG will be btwn 70 and 80 MPG! Can't say that I blame you. A 250 cc will give you excellent milage. Be very careful of the wind and whizzing traffic.

RE: Brand New Bike On Road Trip To Break In? Yes or No

I would follow the instructions in the owner's manual. Unless it states that no breakin is necessary, I wouldn't. IMO a new engine should be pampered for the first 1K miles. A constant speed of any kind could be the worst thing to do to the engine. What bike did you get? Good Luck with it! & Ride Safely!

RE: Dumb and Dumber

Several questions come to mind: 1.How long have you been riding this particular bike? In other words, in this bike new and you are just getting use to it or have you been on this bike for a while. 2. Was your leg numb when this happened? Were you able to stand right up when this happened? 3. What was new, were the boots new, were the pants new? 4. Were you concentrating on why the car in front of you stopped? Did you have to lock up the brakes, or were you leaning slightly when you stopped?
Any additional info would help.
I have been riding this bike since 2002. I began riding motorcycles in 2001. This is my second bike, my first bike was a 250cc Virago.
I rode the Virago about 4 months, bought the Vstar and sole the Virago. I have been on this bike for a while. My leg wasn't numb but due to type II Diabetes both feet are a little numb. I was able to stand up immediately when the bike went down. the bike landed on the left grip and there was virtually no damage at all.
The boots were not new, nor the pants new. I did lock up the brakes and I was leaning to the left anticipating to support the bike when I stopped. I don't believe I stopped in haste. I had plenty of room behind the car, about 15 feet. The only thing I can really recall was that I had trouble getting my left foot off the peg.
Thanks for the interest.

RE: First Motorcycle

I suggest you look at the Yamaha(STAR Motorcycles)cruisers. You might want to start at the 650CC models both Classic and Custom. From there you may want to look at the rest of their cruiser line. I'm partial to these bikes, not because I own one, but I believe they offer a lot of "Bike" for the money. Good Luck and Ride Safely!

Dumb and Dumber

I have been riding since 2001,I'm no kid physically, mentally? you will have to ask my wife. Last Sunday, after filling up the bike, I was coming out of a parking lot. I was still in the lot and as I approached the car in front of me I slowed down cause he had stopped, for some reason, I could not get my left foot off of the peg to put it on the ground to support the bike. It felt as if it was caught on something. I was wearing a short 3/4 boot w/a rubber sole and the peg has a rubber cover to it.
I went down like a rock! Fortunately some guy came forward to help me upright the bike,(It's a VStar Classic and weighs 535 Lbs. when full). I thanked him and got the hell out of there as quick as I could. I was embarrassed and totally enraged at myself. After I calmed down I relived the whole episode trying to understand exactly what happened. Could it be the rubber to rubber contact that caused the problem? Maybe I should remove the rubber cover on the peg? Has anybody have this happen to them? I felt like the guy on the trike from the old TV show "Laugh In". Looking back it must have looked funnier than hell.:S
Thanks for listening and Ride Safely!

RE: rainex on visors

I use Rain-X on my windsheild and on my .
I usually clean both the windsheild and the helmet thru visor with Plexus. follow the indtructions, then apply the Rain-X on the outside of both the windsheild and the helmet see thru visor and buff it up. I try not to ride in the rain unless I have to. The Plexus/Rain-X is just a precaution. Plexus is also good for regular plastic lens on eyeglasses too!

RE: VIAGRA CHEAP !!!

My first bike was a Virago. I was new to motorcycles and I kept getting the name of the bike, Virago, confused with Viagra!
Some of the guys at work rode bikes and one of them asked me what I bought, I looked him in the eye and said it's a 2000 Viagra! He said "you bought a Viagra"? That's when I realized what I had said!
With all of the COOL I could muster and a straight face to boot,
I followed it up with a quick "Yeah...It's a real stand-up bike"...
:CI can still see the look on his face.:h

RE: Waving to other riders

Hey Hawg,
I caught your pics and she is a beauty! I know what you mean about needing a sixth gear. That would be awesome! Maybe if enough people request it Yamaha will come through! I'm trying to post a pic of my ride but can't get it down below 100kb. How did you do that? I have Picassa software and still trying to downsize the pic. Anyway, take care of that beauty and Ride Safely.

"New pix of my 2006 vstar 650 classic with the new 2 3/4 inch hardkrome pipes, bags and the high five air cleaner."
I couldn't see the pics you mentioned.
Am I doing something wrong or were they not there?
BTW, How do you like the 06 V* Classic? I have a 00' and she is a real honey. I think those V* Classics are one of the best looking rides on the road! The price is great too!
I nik-named her "Victoria".... "Vicki" for short.....I thing my wife is a little jealous.:)

April Fools? I believe the last line gave it away, the one about George Bush. The BEST way to guarantee commercial failure today is to make George W. Bush a part of it. Nice try. :S

I know what you mean! I like to keep both hands on the bars. I ride conservatively, haven't been doing it long, only for about 6 years so I'm just a little gun-shy. I figure a little gun-shy is good because it keeps me from doing something real stupid. :)

RE: Waving to other riders

Why do we wave? I believe it's a sign of comradery for bikers. Some bikers can't be bothered, I say Ok no problem. Many years ago when the VW Beetle was gaining popularity, those Beetle drivers always gave a sign by beeping the horn or waving. I guess it was the same as the biker wave of today. Instead of the wave I prefer a Head-Nod. It's not the same as a wave but it means the same thing and it's safer!

RE: Commuter-Tourer

Disregard my first reply, I tried to use color font to distinguish between your question and my answer and it left out my answer???
So your question appears in quotes.
“Is it foolish to buy a bike for which, in order to tour comfortably, I almost certainly will have to find a replacement seat?”
I don’t think so. I think the general rule is that most stock seats are not desired for many reasons. I’m not a long time experienced biker but I did replace my stock seat and others I know did the same for various reasons.
“Are some people truly not bothered by vibration of certain frequencies, or do these people just ignore it? Vibration would seem to be a deal-killer in a tourer. Can handlebar and footpeg vibration be effectively damped?”
I don’t know about footpeg or handlebar vibration but I know that my seat vibration was significantly diminished when I replace the stock seat with a Corbin seat. One other thing I did notice was changing to synthetic oil did relieve some of the vibration and the whining from the tranny. I have learned V-Stars or Yamaha’s in general have a reputation for whining sound from the engine/transmission. As I recall, it had something with the design of certain gears of the bike. I used Mobil Extended Milage 10-30 in a 650 Vstar classic.
Note: As long as the bottom half of the “target” on the back of the oil container does NOT contain any text it is safe to use in a wet clutch bike. If the text on the bottom half reads “Energy Conserving” DO NOT USE IT IN A WET CLUTCH BIKE. “Energy Conserving” means friction proofers were added to the oil. It will cause clutch slippage and you don’t want that. Good Luck
